The fact that two ‘Rip Drawings’ by Sol LeWitt, created in 1973 and 1975, are now on view in the gallery makes reference to the extensive recent publication by Dieter Schwarz. It comprehensively, precisely and knowledgeably documents this little known work group, which exemplifies the conceptual approach of the 1970s. The book ‘Sol LeWitt – Folds & Rips’ demonstrates that concepts can lead to a compelling wealth of inventions and discoveries, and that the works – and not merely the work ideas – prove the validity of the procedure and ensuing executions. A gouache by the artist from 1997 shows that Sol LeWitt was able to integrate and transform the formal ideas from that time once again in the group of ‘Irregular Shapes’.
In choosing exhibits for the current presentation, it was pleasing to note that the works from the 1970s and 1980s are among the most important achievements of the artists represented. With some exceptions, the show features drawings and watercolors that aptly represent the artistic approach of their respective authors. Initially, our exhibition will include works by Joseph Egan, Richard Francisco, Giorgio Griffa, Sol LeWitt, David Rabinowitch, Fred Sandback, Richard Tuttle and Jerry Zeniuk. The selection of works in the exhibition will undergo changes over the coming months.
