50 years | A new room:
Marisa Merz (*1926) and Mario Merz (1925–2003)

The frequent visits of Marisa and Mario Merz in Zurich, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, each became an extraordinary event. The same applies to our visits to Turin and Milan. Our unusual friendship was intense and demanding.

Yet it would be wrong to think that the result of these encounters would have been regular exhibitions in the gallery. It always took many pathways and detours to show one or more works with us.

But the 1977 exhibition “vento preistorico delle Montagne Gelate” and the 1979 presentation “irritabile irritato” remain unforgettable.

The Merz Room, on view from February 22, is both homage and remembrance.

It would certainly be true to say that the fifty years of exhibition history at the Annemarie Verna Galerie began with a strong connection to Italy, to its early and then-contemporary avant-garde: Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and more than anyone else Antonio Calderara, the maestro, born in 1903.

Up until his death in 1978, numerous exhibitions were held, and the friendship, veneration and respect associated with this wonderful artist personality are central elements that imbued the first decade of the gallery's history with atmosphere and meaning. Forty years have passed since Antonio Calderara’s death. A small group of works is now intended as a remembrance.

Giorgio Griffa, born in 1936, was present in Zurich with many exhibitions in our gallery, especially in the 1970s and early 1980s. His inimitable artistic achievement, his fundamental groundwork with the possibilities and building blocks of painting, made it possible to transport a convention into an exciting and contemporary present. Five large-format watercolors and pen and ink drawings from 1972 to 1977 demonstrate this in an exemplary manner.

 

James Bishop, Robert Mangold, Fred Sandback and Friends

Bringing together our friends and the works of the artists with whom we have been connected for many years is the most beautiful task there is. Over the coming weeks, the gallery will be offering a carefully chosen tour through an important part of our program.

The entrance area contains an intimate conversation between works by Andreas Christen, Richard Francisco, Jerry Zeniuk and Glen Rubsamen.

The first large gallery space is dedicated to a presentation of a sculpture and drawings by Fred Sandback.

Then the two smaller rooms follow with works and groups of works by Joseph Egan, Ree Morton and Richard Tuttle, as well as James Bishop, Giulio Paolini and Robert Mangold.

The second larger gallery space awaits with an expansive ensemble of works by Sylvia Plimack Mangold and Robert Mangold.

On Saturday, October 20, we presented a comprehensive new publication on the paintings on paper by James Bishop.
